Dust does not stay in the room it is made in. It walks out on shoes and rides the draught under a door. A zip barrier turns a doorway into a seal you can still get through, which is the difference between a job in a lived-in house and a week of cleaning afterwards.

Carpet film is the other half. It is a self-adhesive roll that goes down over the traffic line and comes up in one piece at the end. The trick is to lay it the day the work starts, not the afternoon somebody treads plaster into the hall. Sizes run from $21.99, with the roll length in feet on the card.

Will an Amylove zip barrier door hold dust back on its own?

It holds most of it if the edges are taped and the room is not under positive pressure. Running an extractor in the work room does the rest.

Does carpet protection film lift the pile?

Not at the tack these rolls use, if it comes up within the fortnight. Left down for a month in a warm room, any adhesive film gets harder to remove.

What thickness of sheeting do you need?

Six mil for anything a boot walks on or a ladder stands on. Thinner film is for covering furniture, and it tears on a corner.
